The Three-Card Tarot Spread

The three-card spread is the simplest, most elegant layout in tarot. Three cards, three moments in time: the past, the present, and the most likely path forward.

How to lay it out

  1. Past — what brought you here.
  2. Present — where you are right now.
  3. Future — where the energy is moving if nothing changes.

Reading the spread

Read each card on its own first. Then read the trio as a sentence: the past leads to the present which points to the future. Look for repeating suits, numbers, or Major Arcana — those amplify the message.

For deeper work, try nine cards

A three-card pull is fast, but it leaves out a lot. For a fuller picture, the daily nine-card reading maps nine positions including the challenge, the foundation, the self, the environment, and the outcome.
